Clarity descriptions at Gem-Fountain
Unlike diamonds, coloured gemstones naturally show very different internal features depending on the gem species. Some stones are typically crystal-clear, while others may show silk, veils, or a slight natural haze — even when no distinct inclusions are visible.
The concept: 3 building blocks
Transparent / Type II / VSI
combines all three building blocks.
1. Transparency
Transparency of gemstones
Transparency describes how well light can pass through a gemstone. It depends on chemical composition, internal structure, and the presence of inclusions.
| Term | Light transmission | Objects behind | Optical effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Transparent | Passes completely without scattering | Clearly and sharply visible | Brilliant clarity, sparkling reflections |
| Semi-transparent | Passes evenly but is scattered | No clear outlines; diffuse light | Soft glow, luminous colours |
| Translucent | Passes partially by thickness | Faintly visible in thin areas | Milky appearance, diffused light |
| Semi-translucent | Small amount passes in thin areas | Objects not visible; light spots | Subdued luminosity, waxy/foggy |
| Opaque | Light does not pass through | Completely blocked | Deep, saturated colour |
2. Gem type categorisation
Type classification
Based on the natural likelihood of inclusions for specific mineral species, to set realistic expectations.
| Type | Characteristics | Examples | Assessment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Type I | Rarely with visible inclusions | Aquamarine, Citrine, Tanzanite | Inclusions highly detrimental to value |
| Type II | Usually small, visible inclusions | Ruby, Sapphire, Spinel | Small inclusions are acceptable |
| Type III | Typically visible inclusions | Emerald, Rubellite, Red Beryl | Naturally tolerated characteristics |
| Type IV | Inclusion & effect stones | Star Ruby, Rutilated Quartz | Inclusions are desirable features |
| Type V | Mostly opaque | Turquoise, Jade, Onyx | Inclusions irrelevant for valuation |
Type IV intensity scale — the optical effect (star, cat's eye, etc.) is rated from 1 to 5:
3. Clarity grades
Clarity grades
Describes the visibility of inclusions that may affect transparency and visual quality.
